Arsenal has shifted its transfer market target and is now focusing on Frenkie de Jong as a major midfield reinforcement.
This decision from the London club came after Joshua Kimmich decided to stay at Bayern Munich, extending his contract until 2029.
With the need to strengthen the midfield, Arsenal has turned its attention to Barcelona’s Dutch midfielder, De Jong, who could leave the club this summer if he does not renew his contract.
The London club feels the need for additional midfield reinforcements, as Jorginho and Thomas Partey might depart during the summer transfer window.
Italian midfielder Jorginho could join Flamengo in Brazil, while Partey may continue in Europe or move to Saudi Arabia.
With this scenario in mind, Arsenal is also close to securing the signing of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi by paying his release clause.
However, Mikel Arteta is not satisfied with just one midfield signing, as he sees De Jong as the key piece to complete a midfield alongside Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and Martin Zubimendi.
On the other hand, Barcelona is open to letting De Jong go this summer before his contract expires in 2026.
De Jong joined Barça from Ajax in the 2019/20 season.
